Ofanleitishamarinn and Fíllinn (Elephant Rock)
It is magnificent to walk along Ofanleitishamar north of Breiðabakki, which is along from Klauf. From the cliff you can watch seabirds and perhaps even spot some killer whales, which can sometimes be seen hunting west of Heimaey.
This trail also offers beautiful views towards the outer islands, south to Storhöfði and to the skerries and Fíllinn (Elephant Rock) west of Blátindur. Fíllinn is a particularly attractive rock formation that resembles an elephant’s head that appears to be wading with its trunk in the sea west of Blátindur.
At the foot of Blátindur is the Vestmannaeyjar golf course, and along the coastline are also Mormónapollur coastal lagoon and Kaplagjóta hollow. It’s fun to walk from Herjólfsdalur to Kaplagjóta and then walk alongside Ofanleitishamar to the south of Heimaey.
