Landlyst Museum
Landlyst Museum is one of the oldest buildings in Vestmannaeyjar. It was built in 1848 by joiner Matthías Markússon and his wife Sólveig Pálsdóttir, who was a midwife. The building played a remarkable role in the history of the islanders. The country’s first birthing center was opened there with a grant from Denmark, where Sólveig had studied midwifery. Vestmannaeyjar Library was later housed on the premises for the first nine years after it was founded in 1862.
The house became protected in 1990 and was subsequently dismantled to be preserved and restored. In 2000, it was rebuilt and moved to Skansinn, where it stands in its original form. It is now open as a medical museum.
