For centuries rock climbing and rope swinging has played an important role among islanders
This tradition has its natural explanations. Near Friðarhöfn, underneath Skipahellir, you will find the Sprangan where the locals, at a young age, learn the art of rope swinging or ‘spranga’ as it is called by locals.
Those who have mastered this “national sport” in the Westman Islands display unbelievable skills in the cliffs. There are various shelves in the cliff some higher than others, from a shelf called „The Public“ up to the top one called „The Grass“.
Those who have never tried this before are advised to be very careful at the Sprangan. Always face the cliff when you swing and push your feet against the cliff. By doing that you can repeat this and get a good swing back and forth.
