Ræningjatangi, the Pirates Split, is situated east off Brimurð on Heimaey

Its name derives from the Algerian Pirate Raid in 1627 when 300 pirates landed in the Westman Islands and captured 242 islanders and sold them at a slave trade market in Algeria.

It is believed that the pirates landed on Ræningjatangi, catching the locals by surprise who were armed with cannons on the Skansinn.
