High mountain tops, porous lava, steep bird cliffs, rocky and sandy beaches
Those are the main characteristics of Heimaey’s coastline.
Heimaey grew considerably in the eruption of 1973. Prior to it, this island was 11.2 km2 but immediately after the eruption, it was measured 13.44 km2. Since then Heimaey has lost some land due to coastal erotion but now the coastline spans roughly 30 km with some unusual and beautiful spots.
While tourists are urged to enjoy the view to the fullest, don’t forget looking down and be cautious. The coastline can be treacherous.
