Hundraðmannahellir, The Cave of The Hundred People, is a historic site and is situated by the 12th hole on the Westman Islands Golf Course

The unusual name derives from events related to the Algerian Pirate Raid in 1627 when a hundred locals, fleeing the sea pirates, hid in the cave.

Alas, the pirates found them, sailed them to Algeria where they, as 242 islanders did, met their destiny and were sold as slaves.

The cave is relatively long but low. To get to the dome at the end of it, crawling is necessary. The dome is quite wide – but would be very crowded for a party of a hundred people!
