In the summer of 1998, husband and wife Erlendur Stefánsson and Guðfinna Ólafsdóttir started a reclamation in a small valley in the new lava in Heimaey

This was only fifteen years after the eruption in 1973 ended and the soil was pure pumice. In the following years vegetation thrived and the grove was named Gaujulundur after Guðfinna (nicknamed Gauja).
