Since 2003, Sæheimar, the natural history museum in the Westman Islands, and The Westman Islands Knowledge Centre have managed the so called Pysju Patrol
Its aim is to assess the condition and numbers of pysjur that land in town each year.
During the patrol, children in town bring the birds they find to Sæheimar where the they are weighed and measured. That way, vital information is gathered regarding the condition of each bird.
Not all pysjur that are captured undergo such checkups, but this gives an idea how the numbers of pysjur shift every year and how well they are doing.
Participation is exemplary and many children come almost every day to have pysjur weighed and checked.
