How can I get to Vestmannaeyjar?
There are two main routes to Vestmannaeyjar. You can take the ferry Herjólfur or you can fly with the airline Eagle-air. Eagle-air departs form Reykjavík airport and the ferry Herjólfur departs either from Þorlákshöfn harbor or Landeyjahöfn harbor. You can find more information in the section “How to get there”.
Why does the ferry Herjólfur have two harbors to depart from when leaving to Vestmannaeyjar?
Landeyjahöfn is the main harbor but sometime conditions in the harbor entrance make it difficult for the ferry to enter the harbor. When that happens the ferry needs to head to Þorlákshöfn. The rout from Þorlákshöfn takes about 3 hours and 50 minutes but the route from Landeyjahöfn takes only 40 minutes.
How can I book a ticket for the ferry?
The easiest way is to go through the booking website for the ferry (http://eimskip.is/EN/iceland_domestic/herjolfur/). There you need to insert information on the date of travelling, number of passengers and select if it is a one-way trip or you need a return ticket. If you are travelling with a car you need to select from a dropdown list the size of the car. Next frame allows you to select which journey you plan to take. Have in mind that some journeys might already be sold out. When you press continue you get to a frame where you add your personal information and then you can proceed to checkout. You can pay with both Visa and MasterCard.
Can I book a cabin when the ferry departs from Þorlákshöfn?
Yes that is possible. When the weather is not so good and you get easily seasick it is wise to book a cabin or bunker to rest in during the trip.
How do I get the tickets for the ferry?
If you booked your journey on-line you should have been able to print them out. You can then bring the printed sheets with you to the ferry. If you cannot print them out you can go to the departure desk on arrival to the harbor and get them there. Remember to be well ahead departure time because there can be long queues.
Do I have to book the tickets for the ferry ahead or can I just turn up?
You do not need to book ahead but it is wise to do so, because it is often sold out.
Where is Landeyjahöfn and how long does it takes to drive there?
Landeyjahöfn is located on the south coast of Iceland about 130 km from the capital city. When leaving from Reykjavík you take route 1 through the towns Hveragerði, Árborg, Hella and Hvolsvöllur. It will take you about 1 hour and 40 minutes to drive from Reykjavík but it is wise to plan for at least one stop along the way and then remember that you need to be at the harbor at least 30 min before departure.
What is the name of the town in Vestmannaeyjar?
The name of the town in Vestmanneyjar is simply Vestmannaeyjar town. The name Vestmannaeyjar is the name of the islands archepelago but the town is located on the island Heimaey. Heimaey is the largest island and the only one that is inhabitated. The name Heimaey meens infact "Home Island".
Do I need to have my rent a car with me to Vestmannaeyjar or can I leave it behind on the mainland?
You can take the car with you on the ferry but you can easily be without it on the island. The island is only about 13 square km so if you are in good form and you enjoy walking you can easily be without the car. It is also possible to rent Segway and even a regular bike on the island.

Is it possible to shop for clothes on the island?
Yes there are many possibilities to shop for clothes on the island. If you are in need for warm clothing you can find shops with quality outdoor wear from most of the popular Icelandic brands. You can also find designers wear like shirts and suits and dresses from international designers houses. In general the prizes are very competitive to the shops on the mainland.
Do I need to reserve a table when going out dining in Vestmannaeyjar?
It is always good to plan ahead and especially during the busy season and during weekends. Most of the restaurants allow you to just drop in and if there is an empty table it will be yours if it suits you. Is it possible to see Puffin on the sea around Vestmannaeyjar?
Yes it is possible to see wild Puffin in in the sea close to Vestmannaeyjar during summer or from late April to late September. If you take a boat trip around the Island Heimaey with the tour operator Viking Tours or if you go on one of the rib boats with the tour operator RIB safari you can see the puffin resting on the see or flying to or from the feeding grounds. In some areas the boats can go very close to the steep cliffs extruding from the sea and there you could see the puffin in the cliffs. But remember to look for them in the grassy cliff tops or in the vegetative areas because that is where you will find them.
Can I see puffin on Heimaey?
Yes Vestmanneyjar hold the biggest breeding population of the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) in the entire world. Even though the population has had some troubles due to climate changes it is estimated to be around 1 million breeding pairs on Heimaey and surrounding islands. The Puffin starts to arrive in late April and then it leaves again in late September. The tour operators Viking Tours and Eyjatours organize bus tours to areas where you are most likely to see Puffin. If you prefere hiking on your own there are many spots to choose from. But remeber to be carefull when walking cloes to the cliff edges.

Ugly Food Festival
During the darkest and longest days it is always good to find some reason to celebrate. So why not celebrate just that? And how about celebrating by eating old and rotten food. Well the Icelanders call it Thorrablót or Þorrablót. The Viking festival is sometime called the "Ugly Food Festival" by foreigners and if you visit Iceland in late February you might be lucky enough to witness or take part in this strange festival.
