There are two main routes to Vestmannaeyjar. You can take the ferry Herjólfur or you can fly with the airline Eagle-air or Atlantsflug. The ferry Herjólfur departs either from Þorlákshöfn harbor or Landeyjahöfn harbor. You can find more information in the section “Getting to & Around”. Eagle-air departs form Reykjavík airport and Atlantsflug from Bakki to Vestmannaeyjar.
Landeyjahöfn is the main harbor but sometimes conditions in the harbor entrance make it difficult for the ferry to enter the harbor. When that happens the ferry needs to head to Þorlákshöfn. The rout from Þorlákshöfn takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes but the route from Landeyjahöfn takes only 40 minutes.
The easiest way is to go through the booking website for the ferry. There you need to insert information on the date of travelling, number of passengers and select if it is a one-way trip or you need a return ticket. If you are travelling with a car you need to select from a dropdown list, the size of the car. Next frame allows you to select which journey you plan to take. Have in mind that some journeys might already be sold out. When you press continue you get to a frame where you add your personal information and then you can proceed to checkout. You can pay with both Visa and MasterCard.
Yes, that is possible. When the weather is not so good and you get easily seasick it is wise to book a cabin or bunker to rest in during the trip.
If you booked your journey online, you should have been able to print them out. You can then bring the printed sheets with you to the ferry. If you cannot print them out, you can go to the departure desk on arrival to the harbor and get them there. Remember to be well ahead departure time because there can be long queues.
You do not need to book ahead but it is wise to do so, because it is often sold out.
Landeyjahöfn is located on the south coast of Iceland about 130 km from the capital city. When leaving from Reykjavík you take route 1 through the towns Hveragerði, Árborg, Hella and Hvolsvöllur. It will take you about 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive from Reykjavík but it is wise to plan for at least one stop along the way and then remember that you need to be at the harbor at least 30 minutes before departure. Yes, it is possible to see wild puffins in in the sea close to Vestmannaeyjar during summer or from late April to late September. If you take a boat trip around the Island Heimaey with the tour operator Viking Tours or if you go on one of the rib boats with the tour operator RIB safari you can see puffins resting on the see or flying to or from the feeding grounds. In some areas the boats can go very close to the steep cliffs extruding from the sea and there you could see puffins in the cliffs. But remember to look for them in the grassy cliff tops or in the vegetative areas because that is where you will find them.
Yes, Vestmanneyjar hold the biggest breeding population of the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) in the entire world. Even though the population has had some troubles due to climate changes it is estimated to be around 1 million breeding pairs on Heimaey and surrounding islands.
