I want to use this opportunity to welcome you to the Westman Islands. But first of all, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. In fact, am not a native of the Westman Islands. I originally moved here with my family as a newly graduated marine biologist, a little over 20 years ago. At that point I did not realize that the Westman Islands would be my future home, although it did not take me long to realise that this, and nowhere else, was where I wanted to be.
The past few years the tourist services of the Westman Islands have undergone considerable changes, although the growth has been slower here than on the mainland. That is due to the fact that this is an island community and the number of tourists is highly limited by transport to and from the Westman Islands.
The Westman Islands had to be sustainable, long before the use of the word „sustainability“ became widely used. That, perhaps, explains the broad variety of services offered here. We have a police station and local health care center, a variety of grocery stores, fashion shops and many kinds of special stores.
Here you will also find a thriving fisheries industry, as through the centuries seamanship has been at the core of the economic life of the Westman Islands.
The last few years tourism has also become a thriving industry, which is extremly important for the local society, as tourism improves the culture and services available to the islanders themselves.
I sincerely hope that you will pay us a visit and that you will enjoy not only the hospitality of the locals and the extraordinary nature of the Westman Islands but also the varied quality services offered to tourists. I am certain that you – just like me – will be mesmerized by the wonderful Westman Islands.
I heartily welcome you!
